Living
Without Oil
Summary
of the book
The economic crisis isn’t over by a
long shot, but the oil price is already
rising. When the world’s economy really
takes off again, we can expect the price
of oil to soar. It’s not a matter of
“the end of oil” but rather not enough
capacity to feed this hungry world,
with a population that is growing by
6 million people per month. Whether
we like it or not, the new-energy driven
economy is developing, and will become
dominant much sooner than many people
currently expect. This throws up a lot
of questions about the future. Answering
these questions is what this book is
about!
Energy companies like Shell and
BP are currently totally focused on
the production of oil based products,
what kind of energy products will they
deliver to us in the near future?
What can we expect from the various
forms of solar energy, the next generation
of bio-fuels and will there be a future
again for nuclear energy?
Was Exxon correct in forecasting
that by 2050, oil, gas, and coal will
still account for 80% of the world’s
energy supplies?
How soon will we drive plug in
electrical and then fully electric cars?
Will planes fly on bio-fuels derived
from sugar?
Which other developments in the
transition to this energy economy are
currently possible and what can be expected
in the near future?
Who will finance all of this?
How will this change the way
we live, the way we work and the way
we spend our holidays?
Will most companies embrace sustainability?
How will climate change affect
or maybe even revolutionize the way
we live, despite all our new energy
efforts?
What could the climate be like
in 2020?
When oil becomes too expensive,
will we have enough food to feed the
people? Without global population stabilization,
humankind will find it impossible to
deal with the critical issues facing
the planet. Without fossil-fuel based
agriculture, the planet could only sustain
about two billion people. The maths
is very simple: To sustain an extra
2.5 billion people while still raising
standards of living everywhere, we will
need to consume about twice as much
energy as we do today. How do we deal
with this crisis – which is literally
a matter of life and death.
Should we try and stop climate
change ... or should we ignore all this
and say, as do more than half of the
American people, that global warming
has nothing to do with human actions?
In the next twenty years we will experience
the transition to a new energy economy.
And we will most likely also experience
a dramatic change in world-climate.
We cannot expect this transition to
be painless!
The renowned trendwatchers Adjiedj Bakas
and Rob Creemers present the megatrends
in the field of energy and climate transition
in this inspirational, visionary, sometimes
hilarious but genuinely insightful new
book. Both of them lecture around the
world and are praised by the press,
academics, politicians and the business
community.
